The Barnacle Lawn Runs on Three Different Rulebooks This November

Over twelve days this November, the lawn at 3485 Main Highway goes through three sets of rules. A dog that's welcome on a Saturday morning is turned away on a Friday night. A bottle of wine is fine at a concert but not at a Sunday picnic. A Tuesday, when the gate is normally locked, becomes a free film night. The Barnacle Historic State Park hasn't changed. Who is hosting has, and the host sets the rules.

The 18 Wheelers concert on Nov. 13, the Holiday Barkzaar on Nov. 14 and AV Club on Nov. 24 each come with their own rules. If you know whose evening it is, you'll know what to bring.

The Default Rules Belong to the State

Most days, Florida State Parks writes the rules. These are the ones in force when nothing else is booked:

  • Hours: Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park is closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • Entry: $2 per person on foot or bike, free for children 5 and under. There's no public vehicle entrance, so drivers use metered parking in the neighborhood.
  • Picnics: Blankets, folding chairs and rolling coolers are allowed on the main lawn. Alcohol, balloons and grills are not. The park has no trash cans, so you carry out everything you bring.
  • Dogs: Welcome from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a handheld leash no longer than six feet. Dogs aren't allowed inside the historic house or at after-hours special events, except Barkyard Theatre.
  • The house: You can only go inside on a guided tour, at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., with a limit of 10 people per tour. Tickets are $3 for ages 13 and up and $1 for ages 6 to 12.

Commodore Ralph Middleton Munroe built the house in 1891. The state park describes it as the oldest house in Miami-Dade County still standing where it was built. Those ten-person tours are the most tightly controlled thing in the park, and they run on the same Thursday-to-Monday schedule as the gate. Every November event below bends one of these default rules.

Tue., Nov. 24 AV Club at The Barnacle The Barnacle and Miami-Dade Public Library System No Not listed Free

Friday, Nov. 13: The Society Lets You Bring the Wine and Leave the Dog

The Barnacle Society runs its Moonlight Concerts on the second Friday of each month. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the music runs from 7 to 9. In its Autumn 2026 newsletter, Society president Mary Scott Russell invites concertgoers to "pack a picnic or grab your favorite take-out, and come throw a blanket on the lawn," and adds that "you are welcome to bring your favorite beverages too," as long as you take all your trash and recycling home. Read the newsletter.

That BYOB permission applies to the concert only. The state's everyday picnic rules still ban alcohol. Concert nights also take away one daytime freedom, because dogs are left at home. The Coconut Grove Spotlight listing for the November show says "No pets," which matches the state's ban on pets at after-hours events.

November's band is the Grove's own 18 Wheelers. The Society's newsletter says they're marking 30 years of "roots rock, honky tonk, and bluegrass." According to the event listing from Greater Miami & Miami Beach, tickets are:

  • $20 for adults
  • $15 for Barnacle Society members
  • $10 for ages 6 to 17
  • Free for children 5 and under

Lawn chairs and blankets are allowed. Tickets are sold through the Society's concert page. An adult concert ticket costs ten times the $2 daytime entry. The extra pays for a band, three hours after closing time and permission to bring your own bottle.

Next on the calendar is Will Thomas, playing yacht rock and a Grateful Dead tribute on Dec. 11.

Saturday, Nov. 14: The Same Lawn, Now Built Around Dogs

Less than a day after a concert that turns dogs away, the lawn opens for an event where dogs are the main attraction. The fifth annual Holiday Barkzaar runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. It's presented by Equipaws Pet Services and The Barnacle Society as a fundraiser for Paw Patrol Animal Rescue and the park.

Barkzaar falls inside regular park hours, so dogs are allowed, but there are more requirements than on a normal day. The Equipaws event page lists them:

  1. Entry is $7. Children under 6 get in free.
  2. Every dog owner signs the park's waiver at the front door.
  3. Dogs need proof of rabies vaccination and up-to-date shots.
  4. No puppies younger than 4 months.
  5. Dogs stay leashed except in the designated off-leash areas.

The organizers expect more than 25 pet and food vendors. The program includes a lure course run by Happy with Dogs, The Dog from Ipanema play zone with kiddie pools for cooling off, and Santa Paws photos by Lorena Cora Pet Photography, sponsored by Healthy Smiles Pet Dental. Pet Supermarket Coconut Grove is sponsoring an ornament-decorating and Letters to Santa station. Food comes from vendors including Chef Norlan and Cafe Vidita. There's also a toy and food drive for local rescues, plus Williamson Cadillac's "Stuff the SUV" collection. On a regular day, the only dog rule is a leash no longer than six feet. On Barkzaar day, you'll need paperwork at the gate, so bring your dog's vaccination records.

Tuesday, Nov. 24: The One Night the Closed Gate Opens

Tuesday is one of the two days the park is closed to visitors. AV Club runs that night anyway. The Coconut Grove BID calendar lists it for Tuesday, Nov. 24, starting at 6 p.m. Earlier editions also landed on Tuesdays, including Sept. 29.

According to Coconut Grove Spotlight, the program comes from The Barnacle and the Miami-Dade Public Library System. It projects 16mm films from the library's Special Collections onto the lawn, and the titles are kept secret ahead of time. Museum registrar Vincent Nastasi hosts. Entry is free and limited to ages 14 and up. Picnics and lawn seating are welcome, and pets aren't allowed. At past screenings, guests could explore the grounds and tour the library before the films started at 7:30. The September edition had a slightly different schedule, so check the AV Club page for Nov. 24 timing before you go.

The age limit is the clearest sign that AV Club has its own rulebook. Concerts are open to all ages and free for the youngest children. Barkzaar is built for families. AV Club is the one November event where a parent with a 12-year-old gets turned away.

The Waterfront Is Still in Temporary Mode

The parts of the park the public sees least are changing the slowest. Park manager Daniel Kelsey wrote in the Autumn 2026 newsletter that there has been "little progress on the pavilion." He also reported that a temporary dock "is up and running," and thanked Mike Chapman and the boathouse volunteer crew for getting it built. In spring, the Society had said city-permit and contractor problems pushed the pavilion's finish past March 18, with no new date set.

According to the Society, the dock means the sailboat Egret can be reached for maintenance and sailing again, after years when the only way out to it was by dinghy. The boathouse behind it was reconstructed in 1926, according to the state park's history, which makes this its 100th year.

For a longer look at that history before the concert, the History in the Grove walking tour on Nov. 8 goes from The Barnacle to El Jardin, covering Coconut Grove's early settlement and architecture. On a regular Sunday, the 2:30 p.m. house tour is the last chance to get inside Munroe's house that day.
